Historic Jamestown preserves the site on Jamestown Island where James Fort was built in 1607 and the later town of Jamestown developed beside the James River as the first permanent English settlement in North America. After nearly collapsing during the starving time of 1609 to 1611, the colony recovered and for decades served as Virginia’s colonial center of government before fires in 1676 and 1698 and the 1699 move of the capital to Williamsburg led to decline. Later preserved through donations, erosion control, and archaeology, the site yielded confirmation of James Fort in the 1990s and now preserves ruins, artifacts, and memorials central to the history of English colonization.
