Wassama Round House State Historic Park in the Sierra Nevada foothills centers on the Wassama Roundhouse, a ceremonial structure that continues to serve as an active meeting place for local Native Americans. The present building is a 1985 reconstruction on a site that had already held four earlier roundhouses, reflecting a tradition that extends to before the 1860s, when such buildings were central to spiritual and ceremonial life for many Native Californians. A roundhouse built here in 1903 incorporated parts of the center pole from two earlier structures, linking generations. The site remains culturally active through Gathering Day, with dancing, crafts, and basket weaving, and it remains open.
