Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge
Science & Tech
Red Oak Creek Covered Bridge, north of Woodbury, Georgia, carries Covered Bridge Road over Red Oak Creek and is also known as the Big Red Oak Creek Bridge. Probably built around 1840 by Horace King while he was enslaved, it is regarded as possibly Georgia’s oldest covered bridge. Its covered Town lattice truss spans 116 feet, while the full structure stretches 412 feet, the longest total span of any covered bridge in the state. Built with heavy heart-pine sills and about 2,500 wooden pegs instead of metal hardware, it remained in everyday use in 1973 and stood as an important survivor from the era when Georgia had more than 250 covered bridges.
