Fort Tonoloway State Park preserves the site of Fort Tonoloway, a small frontier outpost built in 1755 near present-day Hancock by Lt. Thomas Stoddert and men of the Maryland State Militia during the French and Indian War era. Also known as Stoddert's Fort, it served only briefly before being abandoned in 1756 after Fort Frederick took over the region's defenses. The undeveloped park later was at one time leased to the Boy Scouts and has attracted archaeological study, including work published in 2020. Its importance lies chiefly in preserving a tangible link to Maryland's colonial frontier past.
