When a serviceman or woman is lost on the battlefield, it has become customary to arrange the fallen person's boots, rifle, and helmet while surviving members of the squad gather around to memorialize their comrade. Some troops pray and others recall personal stories, but the ceremony is taken very seriously, and every soldier knows the next ceremony might be for them.
