Migdal Synagogue

Migdal Synagogue at Magdala, near the Sea of Galilee, is among the oldest known synagogues in Israel and one of the few identified as in use during the Second Temple period. Uncovered in 2009, the first synagogue preserved stone benches, colored frescoes, and part of a mosaic floor, showing a more elaborate interior than its ruins suggest. Its most important find, the Magdala stone, bears the oldest known Temple menorah image found in a Jewish context while the Second Temple still stood. A second synagogue from the same period, discovered in 2021, deepened Magdala’s value as rare evidence of Jewish communal life in late Second Temple times.
