Lowes Bridge
Transportation
Lowes Bridge is a covered road bridge in rural Guilford, Maine, crossing the Piscataquis River on a 120-foot span near Route 15 south of Guilford Village. The original bridge, built in 1857, served the area for more than a century before floodwaters destroyed it on April 1, 1987. The present bridge, completed in 1990, was built on the original abutments and modeled on the earlier structure while being adapted for modern needs. Its greater load capacity and higher elevation help protect it from future flooding, linking historic preservation with practical response to the river’s hazards.
