Helm's Brigade of Breckinridge's Division, Hill's Corps, under Brigadier General Benjamin Hardin Helm and Colonel Joseph H. Lewis, included the 41st Alabama under Colonel Martin L. Stansel, the 2nd Kentucky under Lieutenant Colonel James W. Hewitt, the 4th Kentucky under Colonel Joesph P. Nuckols, the 6th Kentucky under Colonel Joseph H. Lewis, the 9th Kentucky under Colonel John W. Caldwell, and Cobb's Kentucky Battery under Captain Robert Cobb. On the afternoon of September 18, 1863, the 2nd Kentucky crossed Chickamauga at Glass' Mill and was deployed as skirmishers. Early on September 19, the brigade's remaining infantry, with two pieces of Cobb's Battery and four pieces of Slocomb's Louisiana Battery from Adam's Brigade, crossed the river. Slocomb's rifled section was posted on a bluff on the east side of the stream above the mill. Opposing them across the road on high ground beyond the open fields from the mill was the enemy line of John Beatty's Brigade of Negley's Division, with skirmishers advanced to a cabin in front of its position. Bridges' six-gun battery in Beatty's line, reinforced by three guns of Battery M, 1st Ohio, from Stanley's Brigade, opened on Helm's line. After about three hours of artillery engagement, Helm's Brigade withdrew to the east side of the river, marched with its division to the Confederate right, and after dark recrossed the river at Alexander's Bridge.
