Confederate and Union troops engaged in battle here, with Confederates taking position on the north side of the river after burning the bridge. Union troops occupied the south side and the hill above, destroying much of the village. CSS Neuse was damaged during the shelling. After suffering a number of casualties, Union troops withdrew and marched toward Goldsboro, while Confederate losses were few.
