Southern soldiers who died in the Wilson Confederate Hospital during the war between the States, 1861–1865, are believed through extensive research of available records to lie beneath this burial mound. The account honors them as men who, inspired by the same reverence for freedom as their grandfathers in the American Revolution, gave their lives in defense of their country, homes, and firesides, enduring pain and loneliness while holding firmly to the belief that their cause was just and true for them. It offers affection, reverence, and undying devotion to these fallen soldiers for their unselfish sacrifices and identifies by name those believed buried here, chiefly from North Carolina units along with others from South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and Mississippi.
