In 1838 federal soldiers forced the Cherokee to march from Georgia to the Indian Territory, an area later known as Oklahoma. Thousands died during the march, which began amid a drought and continued into a harsh winter. This forced removal became known as the Trail of Tears. Many Cherokee and their families from this community were made to leave their homes and join the march, traveling along the old federal road that passed by this church.
