The 15th Wisconsin Infantry, under Lieutenant Colonel Ole C. Johnson of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 20th Corps, became hotly engaged with the enemy at this point about 2:00 p.m. on September 19, 1863, held this position for some time, then was forced to retire to a new position in the open field to its left and rear, where it successfully resisted every effort of the enemy to dislodge it. The regiment also helped recapture part of a battery near this place. On September 20, its position shifted to the left about three-fourths of a mile, where it again suffered severe additional losses. Its effective force on September 19 was 176, and its casualties were 4 officers and 9 enlisted men killed, 6 officers and 47 enlisted men wounded, and 2 officers and 43 enlisted men captured or missing, for an aggregate loss of 111.
