Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West opened in Old Town Scottsdale in January 2015 on the former Loloma Transit Station site as a two-story museum devoted to the art, culture, and history of the wider West, including 19 American states, Western Canada, and Mexico. Rooted in former mayor Herb Drinkwater’s vision for Scottsdale as a center for interpreting the region’s past, it is city-owned and nonprofit-operated. Its design uses regional forms and sustainable features, while its exhibitions and programs bring together Indigenous peoples, Spanish and Mexican settlers, and western pioneers. Recognized as a Smithsonian Affiliate and repeatedly honored by True West Magazine, it remains a leading cultural institution in Scottsdale.
