During the Civil War in southwest Missouri from 1861 to 1865, Union soldiers and citizens of Cave Spring and Bowers' Mill lost their lives in defense of their homes. Those remembered include men from the 76th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia, Cave Spring School, Company D, under Capt. Green C. Stotts, and from Bowers' Mill, Company G, under Capt. Henry Fisher and Capt. Thomas Stemmons; men from the 7th Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militia under Capt. Green C. Stotts and Capt. Thomas Stemmons; men from the 15th Regiment Cavalry Missouri Volunteers, Company C, under Capt. Green C. Stotts; and civilian casualties including Sarah Alexander, Richard Price Anderson, Dr. Daniel D. Beck, Linzey S. Beck, Dr. J. M. Stemmons, James H. Colley, Charlotte Colley, Laban T. Fullerton, James M. Hunbard, and Josiah Sparks.
