Richard Butler, born in Ireland, was one of five soldier brothers distinguished for bravery and devoted service. He served as captain of the 2d. Pennsylvania Battalion in 1776, colonel of the 9th. Pennsylvania Regiment in 1777, and major general of the United States Levies in 1791. He was killed in action against the Indians on the Miami in 1791, and Butler County was named in his honor. LaFayette said, "When I want a thing well done I order a Butler to do it."
