Amherstburg Freedom Museum in Amherstburg, Ontario preserves the history and contributions of African Canadians through exhibits, artifacts, and historic buildings closely linked to the Detroit River crossing and the Underground Railroad. Founded by Betty and Melvin “Mac” Simpson and incorporated in 1975, the museum was first known as the North American Black Historical Museum before taking its current name. Its complex includes the Taylor Log Cabin and Nazrey African Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1848 by former slaves and free Black settlers. The church, rooted in a congregation formed by African American refugees in 1826, also served people escaping bondage and is a National Historic Site of Canada.
