On this site, in the old Georgia State Bank building, President Jefferson Davis held the last official cabinet meeting of the Confederacy on May 4, 1865, with senior civil and military officials including John H. Reagan, Stephen R. Mallory, John C. Breckenridge, M.H. Clark, Samuel Cooper, C.E. Thorburn, Braxton Bragg, I.M. St. John, A.R. Lawton, Burton N. Harrison, J.T. Wood, Lubbock, and William P. Johnston present. At this meeting, the Confederate Government was dissolved, the last official papers were signed, the remaining coin and bullion brought from Richmond was disposed of by Davis's order, and the civil and military officials separated to make their escape.
