Built in 1958 in Johnston, Iowa, the Paul J. and Ida Trier House is a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Usonian home and the last of seven such houses built in the state. Adapted from Wright’s 1953 Exhibition House for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, it reflects his effort to create modern, carefully planned homes for middle-class families that feel connected to the land and open to the outdoors. Its hollow clay tile exterior, low flat roof, red concrete floors, Philippine mahogany woodwork, and light-filled south-facing rooms show Wright’s late residential style. Altered in 1967 with a Taliesin Associates-designed north wing, it remains a notable Iowa example of the Usonian ideal.
