Paul M. Grist State Park in Dallas County, Alabama, about 17 miles north of Selma, developed from a 1930s Civilian Conservation Corps project that built roads, trails, and the dam for its 100-acre lake. First called Valley Creek State Park, it was later renamed for Paul Malone Grist, a YMCA director and community leader. The wooded park centers on lake-based recreation, including fishing, boating, swimming, camping, and picnic facilities. In 2015, budget cuts caused a two-month shutdown, but an agreement allowed Dallas County to lease it from the state for 15 years at ten dollars, and it continues operating as a local public park.
