The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis is a nonprofit institution devoted to contemporary art in St. Louis, Missouri. Founded in 1980 under earlier names before taking its current form, it gained a permanent home in the Grand Center Arts District on September 19, 2003, in a purpose-built building designed by Brad Cloepfil. As a non-collecting museum, it focuses on temporary exhibitions rather than a standing collection, presenting about six Main Gallery shows annually and mounting more than 120 exhibitions featuring over 260 artists. Its history also includes debate over architecture and a major 2016 controversy surrounding Kelley Walker’s Direct Drive exhibition.
