The first high school in Kentucky west of the Tennessee River was established at Clinton in 1846. A frame structure was erected and burned in 1854. In 1850, Clinton Female Seminary was incorporated, but it was organized as Clinton Academy because the charter made no mention of only women students. Professor G.W. Ray was an early educational leader in Hickman County, and Clinton became known as the "Athens" of West Kentucky.
