On El Camino Real, the Old Spanish Road, this site was one of three ports of entry in the Republic of Texas from 1836 to 1845, where duties were collected for the entire eastern border. For many years it was the only public building in town, and it also served as a courthouse where cases were tried by many famous lawyers. It was replaced by a new building in 1855.
