The Frontier Military Road carried soldiers and supplies to forts along the "Permanent Indian Frontier," including Fort Leavenworth and Fort Scott in what is now eastern Kansas. Kansas's only major Civil War battle was fought at Mine Creek on October 25, 1864, in the second largest cavalry battle of the war, where approximately 2,800 Union cavalrymen overwhelmed 8,000 Confederates.
