In 1935, Robert Ripley’s syndicated Believe It Or Not! column identified C. D. Abbott as the first citizen of the U.S.A. because he was listed first alphabetically in Autaugaville, the first town in Autauga, the first county in Alabama, the first state in the U.S.A. He also lived on Autauga Street, which was the first street alphabetically in Autaugaville that year. As the town grew, Academy Street was added and crossed the older street, creating what was called "America’s First Crossroad."
