Bakers Island Light, off Salem, Massachusetts, began in 1791 as a daymark guiding vessels approaching the area. In 1798, it was replaced by two lights mounted on a keeper’s house. After storm damage in 1815, an octagonal stone tower was built, and the present round stone tower followed in 1820. Because the newer tower was taller, the two became known as “Ma” and “Pa.” Both remained in service until 1926, when the older, shorter tower was removed. The surviving light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 for its long importance in Salem’s maritime history and along the Massachusetts coast.
