Keweenaw Waterway Upper Entrance Light marks the Lake Superior opening of the Keweenaw Waterway at the mouth of the Portage River on Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The present lighthouse, built in 1950 on the eastern breakwater, grew out of decades of canal improvement after dredging in 1860 made the route important to navigation. Earlier lights, piers, breakwaters, and a fog signal were added as the entrance was modernized, especially after federal purchase of the canal in 1891. Automated in the 1970s, the structure is also architecturally significant for pairing a practical pierhead station with Streamlined Moderne styling, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.
