Held each summer in Jamaica, Queens, the Self-Transcendence 3100 Mile Race is the world’s longest certified footrace and one of ultrarunning’s most demanding events. Founded by Sri Chinmoy in 1996 as a 2,700-mile race and extended to 3,100 miles in 1997, it sends runners around a 0.5488-mile city-block course for 5,649 laps over as many as 52 days. Competitors run daily from early morning until midnight amid ordinary neighborhood life, enduring heat, rain, and exhaustion while pursuing the event’s ideal of self-transcendence. Its modest prizes and notable repeat performances underscore its focus on endurance, inner challenge, and extraordinary persistence.
