Coney Island Light, or Nortons Point Light, stands in Sea Gate at the western end of Coney Island in Brooklyn, marking the edge of a well-known coastal district and helping guide traffic near New York Harbor’s main channel. A light was established here in 1890, and the present steel tower on a steel-pile foundation was first lit in 1920. Automated in 1989, it remained part of the shift away from staffed lighthouses in the United States. Its white skeletal form with black trim is distinctive, and its history is tied to Frank Schubert, among the nation’s last civilian lighthouse keepers, who served here from 1960.
