Linchester Mill borders Hunting Creek, a tributary of the Choptank River flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. The site provided a crossing for Native Americans traveling the Choptank Indian Trail, colonists en route to the first Choptank River ferry at Hog Island, participants in the first salt raid of the American Revolution, the first trans-Peninsula railroad to Ocean City, and customers buying moonshine at Tom’s Still. A mill has stood here for 250 years. The braced-frame mill was built in 1827 and had two structural additions, the first in 1890 to accommodate new equipment and the second in 1917 when the Fitz waterwheel replaced the large wooden waterwheel.
