From the close of the Civil War to the beginning of the twentieth century, Cariola Landing at Grand Lake was one of the largest shipping points on the Mississippi River south of Helena, Arkansas. Cotton from a large area west and south of Eudora was shipped out and supplies were received. Cariola was named for Carrie, wife of merchant and planter A. Meyet, and Eola, wife of merchant Peter Ford.
