Awbury Arboretum is a 55-acre nonprofit arboretum and historic estate in Philadelphia’s Germantown section, rooted in land Henry Cope bought in 1852. Designed in the English landscape tradition with advice from William Saunders, it emphasizes open spaces, clustered plantings, and long views. The Cope family formally established the arboretum in 1916, and it became a nonprofit in 1984. Its Francis Cope House, built in 1860, serves as headquarters, and the entire landscape lies within the Awbury Historic District, designated in 2001. Mature trees, ponds, meadows, wooded trails, a farm, community garden, and playground make it both a historic estate landscape and a free public green space.
