Goat Island Light stands on a small treeless island at the entrance to Cape Porpoise Harbor near Kennebunkport, Maine, where it was established in 1835 to guide vessels into the harbor. Authorized in 1833, the station began with a 20-foot tower, replaced in 1859 by the present circular brick tower with a fifth-order Fresnel lens. A keeper’s house was added in 1860, and a boathouse followed in 1905. Together with the oil house and dock, these buildings preserve the typical layout of a small coastal light station. Automated by the United States Coast Guard in 1990, it remains an active light.
