Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore preserves 42 miles of Lake Superior shoreline in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and was established by Congress in 1966 as the nation’s first national lakeshore. It is renowned for 13 miles of multicolored sandstone cliffs shaped into caves, arches, and other striking forms by wind, waves, and weather, with colors created by mineral stains. The area also includes waterfalls, beaches, dunes, forested highlands, and features such as Grand Sable Dunes and Au Sable Light. Known to travelers long before federal protection, it has a long geologic history, a hazardous shipwreck coast, and remains a major scenic and recreation destination.
