Danville’s Main Street Historic District is a residential district bounded by Main, East, Cross, and Marion streets. Its nineteenth- and early twentieth-century homes reflect the social and economic diversity of residents, including the town’s prominent citizens. Part of the original 1824 Danville plat, it lay west of the downtown commercial area and reflected the town’s growth and prosperity. Danville became the county seat of Hendricks County when the Indiana General Assembly formed the county in 1824. The town served as a market center for area farmers from the 1820s into the early 1900s, and industries developed along the tracks of the Indianapolis and St. Louis Railroad built in 1870. The district was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.
