Stretching from Washington, DC to Cumberland, MD, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is a 184.5 mile-long testament to human ingenuity and transportation heritage. Men, women, and children operated mule-powered canal boats carrying coal, lumber, and other goods. Today, the C&O Canal provides diverse recreational opportunities, affords access to the Potomac River, and serves as the backbone for national and regional trail systems.
