Along Gwynns Falls Park at Windsor Mill Road, a two-mile section of trail between this point and Trailhead 4 at Leon Day Park preserves the route of an early 1800s millrace that carried water from Dickeyville to power the five former Calverton Mills downstream. This is the trail’s only gravel-surfaced section, and stone support walls from the millrace can still be seen. The millrace was filled in during 1913 to create a walking path through a Piedmont forest, now lined with many hardwood species and frequented by woodland birds. Nearby connections lead to the Windsor Mills Conservation Trail, historic Dickeyville, and Winans Meadow through Leakin Park, while exhibits along the route highlight the rich historical heritage associated with the Gwynns Falls.
