At 346 William Avenue in downtown Davis, the Davis Lunch Room opened in 1942 under James and Lucy Quattro, part of a business community that included several immigrant families whose descendants still live there. James came to the U.S. from Italy in 1904, returned to Italy to marry Lucy in 1913, and Lucy immigrated in 1916. Before opening the restaurant after nearly three decades, they owned a small farm in Coketon and James mined coal. By the time the restaurant opened, the U.S. had entered World War Two, and while the couple had three sons and a son-in-law serving overseas, the business also became popular with soldiers training at nearby Dolly Sods. The building's use during the timber era is unclear, but it also housed a phone company, ski shop, beauty salon, and other businesses.
