Mount Hood rises at the northeastern end of Sonoma Valley near Santa Rosa, reaching 2,733 feet in the Mayacamas Range, mostly in Sonoma County and partly in Napa County. Originally called Mount Wilikos, an Indigenous name meaning “willows,” its slopes were inhabited in prehistoric times by a division of the Yuki tribe. The mountain later took its present name from William Hood, a Scottish settler who climbed it in 1846. Protected largely within Hood Mountain Regional Park, it is known for its broad rock face, Gunsight Point, sweeping views, and unusually varied habitats, including oak woodland, chaparral, riparian areas, and pygmy forest.
