In Old Town Eureka, California, the Clarke Historical Museum preserves regional and cultural history in the former Bank of Eureka building, with especially strong holdings related to Native communities of the North Coast. Founded by Eureka High School teacher Cecile Clarke, who first displayed local Native American basketry at her school, the museum moved into the 1911 bank building in 1960 after she sold her family ranch to make room for the growing collection. Its Native American wing, Nealis Hall, opened in 1979 and includes internationally recognized collections connected with the Wiyot, Yurok, Karuk, and Hupa. The museum also occupies a notable Neoclassical building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
