The USS Nautilus was designated an historic ship by the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers on the occasion of that organization's 100th anniversary. Members of the society designed and supervised the construction of the Nautilus near here. The ship brought about a worldwide revolution in submarine design, becoming the first ship to sail under nuclear power and the first ship to transit the north pole.
