In 1926, inventive surveyor Jasper S. Bilby, chief signalman of the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, designed the nation’s first galvanized steel surveying towers. Bilby Towers bolted together easily and could be quickly dismantled for use at the next survey site. The last remaining Bilby Tower was recently reconstructed for permanent display in Jasper Bilby’s hometown of Osgood, Indiana.
