Point State Park occupies the Forks of the Ohio in Downtown Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny and Monongahela join to form the Ohio River, a site long prized for its strategic importance. French and British forces fought over this junction in the mid-18th century, building Fort Duquesne and later Fort Pitt, which gave Pittsburgh its name. The site was also the scene of the 1763 siege of Fort Pitt and the notorious smallpox-blanket episode involving Delaware emissaries. Later transformed into an industrial district, the Point was remade as a state park completed in 1974. Today it preserves fort remains and the Blockhouse while serving as a major civic and historic space.
