In Ohio’s southwestern corner near Cleves, Shawnee Lookout Archeological District spans about 2,000 acres and includes forty-six archaeological sites, many within Shawnee Lookout Park. Its river bottoms and wooded hillsides helped attract prehistoric settlement, and the area preserves roughly 10,000 years of Indigenous presence in the Ohio Valley. Evidence from the sites reflects a long sequence of cultures, including Archaic peoples, the Hopewell tradition, and other Woodland communities. Biological remains such as bird and fish bones, walnuts, turtle shells, and deer bones reveal foodways and resource use. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
