Mount Octopus, a 2,444-foot mountain in the western foothills of the Olympic Mountains in Jefferson County, Washington, has served both forestry and public safety needs. Its summit functioned as a fire lookout site from about 1957 to 1974. Afterward, inmates from the nearby Olympic Corrections Center removed the lookout from its tower for relocation to the Forks Timber Museum, but it burned before the move was completed. In September 2000, the summit became the site of a NOAA Weather Radio repeater station that helped fill major emergency radio coverage gaps across the Olympic Peninsula, especially for tsunami warnings and broadcasts to vessels near Washington’s Pacific coast.
