2
Built in 1863 by Union soldiers under Col. James Mulligan on a hill occupied by both Confederates and Federals, the fort protected the vital B&O Railroad to the north and served as a staging area for operations against Confederates. On January 31, 1864, troops under Gen. Jubal Early shelled the fort, but the Union garrison under Col. Joseph Thoburn had evacuated it.
