Military
Rev. Samuel Dunlop's house, settled in 1741, was burned in the massacre of Nov. 11, 1778. On that day his wife Elizabeth, standing at the door holding an infant, was shot down in cold blood by Walter Butler's Tories and Indians. Nearby at the left stood the apple tree into which her arm, brutally severed from her body, was thrown.
