The Roanoke College Administration Building was built in stages in 1848 for the center section, 1852 for the west wing, 1854 for the east wing, and 1903 for the third floor. Roanoke College, founded amid the widespread practice of slavery, had many Board of Trustees members, administrators, and faculty who were slaveholders. While the college's first students studied, enslaved people built the campus. Early campus structures, including the Administration Building, were created through the effort, artisanal knowledge, and technical skills of enslaved builders, brick makers, masons, and laborers who worked on this site. Their contributions to the college must be acknowledged and always remembered, and their presence in its history challenges the institution to think anew about its foundational values.
