On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, Ohio National Guard troops fired on unarmed students during a rally against the Vietnam War’s expansion into Cambodia, the Guard presence, and the draft. In about 13 seconds, 28 guardsmen fired roughly 67 rounds, killing Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Lee Scheuer, and William Schroeder, and wounding nine others, including one person left permanently paralyzed. The shootings followed days of protest, unrest, the burning of the ROTC building, and inflammatory rhetoric by Governor Jim Rhodes. National outrage helped drive a massive student strike and made the event an enduring symbol of conflict over war, dissent, and state violence.
