Torreya State Park occupies a varied stretch of bluffs, ravines, swamps, and high pinelands along the Apalachicola River and is named for the rare Florida nutmeg tree that grows in this unusual habitat. The area preserves some of Florida’s highest ground and supports several uncommon and endangered plants, giving it exceptional natural importance. It also holds a long human history, from earlier Native American inhabitation to Andrew Jackson’s crossing during the First Seminole War, the Bellamy Road, and a Civil War battery whose gun pits remain. Developed as one of Florida’s original state parks by the Civilian Conservation Corps, it includes the reconstructed Gregory House and remains a center for recreation and interpretation.
