Santa Fe’s cathedral basilica stands near the city’s historic core as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Fe, on a site used for colonial churches since 1626. A mission church there was destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and later replaced by La Parroquia, built between 1714 and 1717. After the Diocese of Santa Fe was created in 1853, Bishop Jean Baptiste Lamy began a new cathedral, dedicated in 1887, in Romanesque Revival style. The complex preserves the La Conquistadora Chapel and other historic artworks while later renovations and restorations have continued to shape this prominent, active church.
